“A fount of sensible ideas for cat house owners.” —The New York Occasions

From a number one veterinary psychiatrist, a groundbreaking exploration into the minds of our feline companions and “a information to being the most effective people we may be for our cats” (Focus Vif).

Cats are mysterious creatures, and the connection between people and cats has by no means been easy. Curious and affectionate, unbiased and uninterested, predator and prey. Their true nature continues to elude us, and their refined and complicated behavioral issues can typically appear unsolvable or incomprehensible. So, how can we inform if a cat is struggling? What are the foundation causes of feline aggression? And the way can we deal with sufferers who can’t communicate for themselves?

On this fascinating guide—already a bestseller in its native France—veterinary physician and psychiatrist Claude Béata attracts on cutting-edge analysis and a long time of expertise to revolutionize our understanding of cats and remodel our appreciation of feline psychological wellbeing. Right here, we meet Nougatine, a Siamese affected by bipolar dysthymic dysfunction, Tabatha, an anxious Ragdoll with attachment points, and Melly, an Abyssinian battling a feline type of schizophrenia—in addition to their house owners who search recommendation and assist.

Charming, shocking, and providing illuminating perception into a spread of problems, Béata’s guide requires better compassion and offers a brand new method of understanding cat habits so we are able to look after the psychological, and bodily wellness of our beloved furry associates.

    Really educational and enjoyable
I’m actually very surprised at the two existing reviews. While some people may disagree with some of the advice given I find this book helps me understand many of the things I already knew through working with cats in an adoption center. For example, cats have both attributes of being hunters and prey, and how they balance that in their lives. About how a mother cat will hold her kittens quiet if they’ve crossed the line in their play how a mother cat teaches the kittens to use the litter box and a really good section marking and urinary problems and marking with facial pheromones. Probably more for a person who’s really into handling cats regularly but I found it very interesting and a very well written book. Remember the author is not from the US so some of the advice may lean toward European lifestyles with cats. I am recommending the book to other volunteers in the adoption center because it explains why why the things we are already doing to help the cats makes sense and works.

    Mixed bag
I am very happy that people are becoming more and more aware of the true needs of their animal companions. Feline psychology and psychiatry is becoming a real thing. This book delves deeply into the subject, with many real-life examples and stories. but I, like other reviewers, find some of its advice bizarre, such as letting cats roam and mate freely. So you can learn useful knowledge, but you should take it all with a grain of salt. Thanks to the publisher, Scribner, and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book.

  3. Christopher O’Riley

Very important work on the psychology of cats
Very informative and trailblazing in its embrace of the idea of well-being of animals as a combination of concern for kind and body. A truly amazing and beautifully written book.

    Cats!
5/5 stars. I can’t believe we have waited this long for a book of this level to be translated! I learned more from this book about cat behavior that I could from taking a course, so I highly recommend it to those looking to better understand cat behavior.
