A Fine Series Featuring A Truly Memorable Lead Character
“The Camera Man” is the latest in Peter Grainger’s superlative “King’s Lake” mystery series. Superlative, because it unfailingly delivers the three essential elements required by the genre: memorable characters, striking sense of place, and plot. For my money, character is the most important of these elements. In David Smith, Grainger has created a personage unique in my extensive experience as a reader of detective fiction: scarred but never defeated by life, immensely skilled as an observer of human nature (the required attribute of any great detective), brave, loyal, and, above all, precise in word and deed to the point of fussiness.I eagerly await these books, and Grainger never disappoints. Let’s hope that further glimpses of DC Smith will be forthcoming soon.

Such a good story!
I could try to think of fancy adjectives, but it all comes down to Peter Grainger being an excellent storyteller and writer. If you like John le Carré, Peter Grainger is for you.

Solid.
An overall good story teller. I have read all 10. Character development is excellent, and for me that is of prime importance.

Another DC Smith Smash
Peter Grainger writes with perception, intelligence, and kindness. I canât recall how we came across the DC Smith series, but in a world of DC-this and DC-that series, DC Smith is one we remember and seek out. âThe Camera Manâ finds DC Smith cherishing the small moments and appreciating the wisdom that comes from experience (and age). The story is well-imagined and executed; Grainger writes in such a way that you can see it all in your mindâs eye and feel the injustices lobbed and the satisfaction when cruel behavior is called out for what it is. A well-meaning and naive son/businessman, his manipulative and greedy wife, and a five-year mystery disappearance that is resolved by a meticulous and thoughtful detectiveââThe Camera Manâ is a novel worth your time.

Part of a wonderful series!
Ever since coming across my first DC Smith novel, Iâve been hungry for more. I think I started with the second one then went back to the first and then went straight through as fast as I could get my hands on them. Now I have just finished this most recent one and continue to be in awe of Peter Grangerâs talent. His characters feel very real, theyâre funny, theyâre lively, theyâre smart. Theyâre not perfect. Theyâre very human. I canât recommend this series highly enough.

First time.
Well described characters & setting. Good inclusion of previous tales. Healthy, clean language; credit to good morals and to sensible thinking.

One of my favorite DC novels yet!
I’ve read all of the kings lake series, and all of the DC books to date, and this is one was one of my favorites yet. It was delightfully warm, in a way I can’t quite explain. Suspenseful without feeling forced. Already looking forward to the next in the series.

He just keeps getting better
A tough case for DC Smith. He has a lot to figure out before the end. All of the characters and the locations are splendid.

DC Smith is one of my favourite characters in detective fiction to day. I am happy Peter Grainger is still writing about him even though DC has retired. I had the feeling that initially there was to be limited series about him and I was relieved he was brought back from near death to live a happy retirement with Jo.I love the style of writing which carries you along in a smooth, observational ,engaging way with the occasional dialogue. The Camera Man has the usual good development of characters , with some tension and action but not too much violence. It is a puzzle to be solved with intelligence and some serendipity. DC is the man for the job.

As ever, Peter Graingerâs excellent writing moves this story along with a deft sense of mystery, a generous dose of humour, and wonderfully believable characters that sweep the reader along at a good, but not frantic, pace. I enjoyed savouring another DC Smith adventure and all that entails. His character continues to grow and his friends and associates blossom too. I just canât wait for the next one! Very highly recommended.

The DC Smith series is absolutely one of my favourites. The stories are so considered, well laid out and told, the characters have got great depth and are wonderfully developed and the books are just a pleaseure to read. This one was no exception to that, with a great plotline and a nice bit of a moral dilema. Wonderful!

No matter what the circumstances , Smith amazingly finds his way through the maze presented to him. If you start reading Peter Grainger books, you never want them to end but then…hopefully there will be another one waiting for you !

DC Smith novels are always a treat. Excellently written with insight and intelligence, I know I my time in this world will be well spent and this book was satisfying and enjoyable to read. Peter Grainger for me is the best of the writers of this genre and if you enjoy Louise Penny, Deborah Crombie, Elly Grifiths and the like then you should start this series at the beginning. Youâll find yourself hooked. It would be great if they were available in paper format – DC Smith himself is disappointed they are not!
