3rd Horrified game: solid experience with some issues
I’ve been a big fan of the Horrified games and was excited of this new version involving Greek Monsters. While I do wish they had maybe did something like London monsters (Jack the Ripper, Springheel Jack, etc.), this is still a good version of Horrified. While it is still a reskin, there are some new things/features that stand out.1. Each monster has 3 symbols. When drawing a Monster Card during the Monster phase, an event or movement of the monster will be represented by its symbol and color just like its predecessors. However, the Siren has 3 symbols like the Branch of Dionysus, Vase of Aphrodite, Wings of Hermes. Depending on the monster you use, other monsters like Medusa, the Minotaur, and the Basilisk share a symbol with the Siren which means multiple monsters can move just like in the previous games.2. Lairs that must be found. Unlike its predecessors where when you use a monster you place a lair token indicating where you need to go to advance and/or defeat them, you must find them by spending an action to reveal the lair. There are 4 lairs 1 for the Minotaur, Medusa, Chimera, and Cerberus. You must have all the lairs on the board regardless if you’re not using the monster. It gets tricky especially solo mode because your turn can be wasted when revealing a lair for a monster that isn’t in play and 1 monster card will force you to turn over a reveal lair token face down and shuffle any other face down lairs and place them near the locations where a lair needs to be.3. Heroes have more unique abilities than its predecessors. Where the Universal and American Heroes have pretty much the same abilities, the Greek Heroes are very much different. For starters, there is no Hero with 3 actions anymore though there is one (The Traveler) that has 5 but no ability.Abilities are known as Favor of the Gods (FotG) and some abilities are worse than others. The Shepard’s FotG is looking at the top Monster Card. Seems good, but feels like a bit of a waste of an action especially in solo play. Feels more like an ability that should always be in effect at the start of the players turn similar to the Ranger FotG where he takes a Perk card should the Terror Level increase. For most part, the Heroes abilities are pretty much a lot different from the previous Horrified Heroes. In terms of what I like is the components. The board is colorful and sturdy. The figurines are top notch like in the American Monsters version. The perk cards and the monsters card are a tad flimsy but are well designed. Some of the new ways to defeat the monsters are unique albeit pretty difficult. Cerberus, for example, requires rolling the dice and matching the faces on the locks to open the underworld and send Cerberus back.If there is anything I don’t like is, again, 1 or 2 Heroes abilities isn’t great, There’s also the monster mats for each monster. While great in design, it can be flimsy and easy to bend a bit, but what is annoying are the edges that stick out in the corner and on the sides of the mat. They come in a big bag and if you’re planning to use bag, the mats tends to catch the bag when you pull them out or put them back in. Finally the biggest issue I have is the rules particularly the rules for the monsters. Where the Universal and American monsters have more detail in how they work in the game as well as some detailed background to what they are, in Greek Monsters it’s more streamlined. There are 2 pages for the monsters at the end of the rule book with each monster that list its objective, setup, power, advance, and defeat and it’s about the size of the paragraph of which just about everything can be found on the monster mats. For a game about Greek Monsters, they could’ve gone into more detail background about each for those who are not familiar or don’t remember some of the monsters. I know it seems like a superfluous thing focus on, but it’s seems like a step back from the previous rules where it introduces the monster and then explains how they work and how to defeat them.Still despite these issues it’s still a solid Horrified game that I would recommend to any Horrified fans or to those who love Greek mythology. If you’re not a fan or lack interest in Greek Mythology and monsters this may not be for you. Also might be useful to do a bit research as a brush up for the monsters, the locations (Acropolis , Temple of Nyx etc), and the Legends (Chiron, Orion, etc). Not necessary, but might be useful.

A must-have if you love Horrified
I had to have this because I love the Horrified series. I think this is the most challenging one yet. Very fun and VERY thematic. Easy to learn if you know any of the others, but with enough differences that it is unique and interesting in its own way.

    Great fun!
I got this game for my son (in his 20’s) for his birthday, which was a big hit! I have had a chance to play it with him and friends, and it was really fun. I love that it’s a cooperative game, so everyone plays to beat the game, not each other. It made it fun that it was interactive strategizing throughout. It was more satisfying than having to wait a while for your turn to come around. I would recommend it (mainly for teens and up) who enjoy cooperative games.

Great game that has been to the table multiple times
I play games with a group of people 1-2 times per week. Many of us are into cooperative games and some have enjoyed the Horrified series. I had this game to the table 4 times in 4 consecutive sessions because so many people wanted to play and play again.Very challenging with 5 players but we fairly consistently beat it with 4 players, both with the intro monsters and 3 somewhat random monsters. This was with both new and experienced gamers. We all enjoyed the new characters and most of the new mechanics introduced into this version. We loved the symbols for the monster phase. There was some confusion on monster abilities and movements, plus card wording and character abilities, that were not made clear in the instructions and many people in forums couldn’t agree either.Overall it’s a great game with high replay value.
