Remember creamy avocados, good flavor, not stringy or hard and watery. This is the ones you want.
I love avocados. But for years a decent, just decent, avocado was hard to find. You took your chances, and price didn’t change anything. 80c avocado or $3 one, you generally got something that resembled avocado, but wasn’t it.You had it perfectly ripened, and take a knife to it. You open it up, mouth watering for that avocado toast supreme, or BLT with avocado. Or the tomato//avocado omelette with feta.Yum!Instead the knife reveals: somehow the softly ripened avocado is ridiculously hard inside. It defies physics, but there you have it. Soft, ripened outside. Rock hard inside. I don’t know how, but it happened. Then you get the watery ones. How does an avocado get watery inside? Another mystery I cannot solve.Worst was the stringy ones. Celery has strings. Avocados do not. Unless it’s an American supermarket avocado. And people accepted this facsimile of an avocado, and kept buying them. Over and over, they devoured the tasteless green slime, never knowing this is not what an avocado is supposed to be.When a Whole Foods opened a few blocks from me, I went to the insane grand opening. I had heard of them, but now I had one right down the street. Walking distance, 10 minutes tops. In all that chaos of opening day, someone handed me an avocado. It was pretty bulbous, and full feeling. I put it in my pocket and took it home with me. Didn’t think anything of it till three days later, when I thought I ought to discard it. Before I did, I wanted to open it, for yet another disappointing encounter. When I did, I noticed there were no strings. Okay, a big plus. When I poked it a little, it was soft throughout. My tastebuds started talking, saying things like “just one bite! c’mon! one bite!”.I got a spoon and scooped out a tiny piece. Oh my goodness. A real avocado.A real one.All the buttery, creamy goodness was there! EVERYTHING I remembered about avocados was right there. I ate every single bite of that bulbous green delight! Right there at the kitchen counter.I went walking down to the Whole Foods, and while they weren’t giving them out free anymore, I bought four more. I did not care one whit how much they cost. It’s been a couple of years now and I’ve yet to encounter a bad avocado from there. Some I thought were too small for the craving. A few I opened before they hit that perfect ripeness, but they were still delicious! It’s a real pleasure to have them back on the menu, for breakfast lunch AND dinner. I wish those who are buying those puny flavorless little things at the supermarket could have one taste to see what the massive difference is. It’s like hamburger to prime rib.I have two sitting on my buffet right now, ready for the weekend. Prime Rib.

Avacados for fat in diet
Fruit of avocados is good for guacamole with corn chips. You must put in garlic and your choice of items. They fill out a salad as well. Some people put them over a ground beef hamburger or toast alone. Have fun. They need to be ripened up a bit. Rebecca A. Dokter Grelson, November 2024.

Tastes the same as regular avocado
The taste is good, but they’re not very large and the quality seems the same as regular, non-organic avocado. Make sure to buy them at least a few days before you plan to use them and let them ripen outside of the fridge, next to bananas if you need them to ripen faster. We usually put them in the fridge after about 3-4 days, and they will stay more or less at the same level of ripeness for several more days.
