These installed really easily
We’ve got Spectrum for our wireless internet, and in the past I’ve had difficulty installing 2.4g devices because Spectrum doesn’t have separate 2.4g and 5g, only 5g. But these four smart plugs installed really easily. I plugged each of them in turn into the same outlet to add the device to the Kasa Smart app, went through the sequence including firmware update, and then unplugged them and put them where I wanted them. I set up a Freezer, Fridge, Microwave, and Power Station device, then entered my power company data for one of the devices. Once that was done, the app asked me if I wanted to sync the paintstakingly entered kWh peak/mid-peak/off-peak data with the other devices…well, heck yeah!I know eventually I’m going to want to get a Matter-compatible local hub, but for now these work just fine just through wireless and the app. I’m not sure yet which hub I want to get, but I know I want one that will work off-grid and universally will all the devices I have. I am setting up a solar system piecemeal, as I can afford the parts, and knowing what our essential appliances draw is critical. I got tired of crawling behind furniture and pulling out the fridge/freezer from the wall to use one of those larger plug-in meters. These allow me to see from the app exactly what’s going on with my critical appliances and devices.Tip: Our power company uses the terms Peak, Off Peak, and Super Off Peak, which I translated to Peak, Mid Peak, and Off Peak in the app. It gives you separate settings for Summer and Winter, and I was able to very precisely dial in the electricity rates for all usage segments and months in the app.The beauty for me, and why I wanted these, is so I can get a firm handle on what these appliances consume in a typical day so I can be sure I’ve got our grid-down backup system up to snuff. I may add more smart plugs later, but things like our coffee maker and cooking I’ve got covered with non-electrical backup methods. There is no way we could afford enough solar to run our whole-house air conditioner, so I’m not even going to try to calculate that. We have our DC fans and blocks of ice frozen in the freezer to hold us over a few days if we are without power. The grid’s been going down a lot here lately.

not terrible, but not great either
When they work, they seem to work well, but if something goes awry they can be a pain to get working again.Some setup tips:- If you want to use this in Apple home, but also have them Alexa enabled, do the setup in Apple home first. Once that works, you can find a setup code in the accessory settings, and use that to enable it in the Alexa app.- If you have separate wifi SSIDs for 2.4Ghz/5Ghz, when setting it up on your phone, make sure the phone is connected to a 2G networkIf all goes wrong, you can factory reset them by holding the power switch for 10 seconds.Odd things:- When it first powers up, before it even tries to get a DHCP lease, it seems to set itself up on 192.168.1.80. This might cause problems if you have something already on that address.- Sometimes it’ll fall back to that address after hours of happiness on its assigned address. I put this down to the unit having DHCP timeouts perhaps due to wifi signal problems.- Alexa frequently says the device isn’t responding. Asking siri to the do the same thing works. I have no idea how to debug this.Summary: They work some of the time. When they don’t they’re infuriating. Hopefully future firmware updates will fix some of the flaws.
