Fotodiox Pro, Replacment Gear Ring Belt for DSLR Follow Focus Rig
Review for: Fotodiox Pro, Replacment Gear Ring Belt for DSLR Follow Focus Rig. Fits lens with 60-105mm Diameter.Purpose: to convert a standard photographic lens and allow it to fill the shoes of a cinematographic lens (which has built-in gears for follow focus)Pros:Excellent build qualityRubber material will stretch a little to make a super-tight fit on the lensDSLR rig gears mesh perfectly into itExcess material can be trimmed off easily with shears or cuttersCons:You can’t use this device for a lens that requires more than a full barrel rotation to focus from infinity to close. Your follow focus gear will hit the plastic piece on this ring. So this doesn’t fully replace a correctly fitted metal ring made for your lens. Then again, it’s 10x cheaper…Conclusion:If your lens doesn’t require more than a full barrel rotation to focus from infinity to close, you can’t go wrong with this ring. It’s cheap but very well made. My advice: buy one for each lens you’ll be using. You don’t want to have to swap these out on set. I got two for my zooms, now I’m ordering 5 more for my prime lenses.

    pretty neat cheap focus gear
So far it works pretty good on my DSLR lenses, I have one an a Canon 24-105 f4 L, and no issues, Same with Tokina 11-16. they are trickier to install than I would have thought and are not yet super tight but they are easy enough once you get the hang of it. Works well with my redrock v2 follow focus. I lost a screw on follow focus gear and wanted something quick that worked well. This does that. My lenses are not super tight on the rotation and are pretty new. If you had a lens that was older and tougher to turn I am not sure how well it would perform, most likely it would be fine.

    Works Perfectly
Nothing to complain about. Engages the gears on the follow focus and the action is very smooth.

    ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
These gears are the SH*T!!! They are so gooooooooood! I would recommend these to EVERYONE as they are honestly the BEST gears I’ve been able to find. Took some advice from Tom Antos, as he suggested these. At first I thought why not go with the more expensive model from Lanparte, or the heavy duty DFocus rings, or even the Cavision rings, and NONE of them compared in price and quality to this. All the other gear rings I’ve tried are literally garbage. They break easily, or they’re too stiff, or they dont lock properly and slip, too big, etc….but this…. this little gear ring from Fotodiox is definitely the best I’ve tried. Bought one for all my lenses and just leave them on in their cases in my lens bag. I can’t speak more highly of these rings so I encourage everyone to get one. or do what I did, get 6 because they’re so good haha.

Dirt cheap, and do the job.
I’m a Steadicam operator, and sometimes on low budget productions, I’m handed lenses like Canon primes, which have no focus gearing. To operate them with my wireless follow focus, I need gears I can apply, and I need them to be cheap enough to just toss a few in my kit. These do the job excellently!I purchased others on Amazon before, and they were rubbery, cheap, and could easily cause blown shots, because they allowed the gear on my follow focus to skip. These are made of a semi-hard plastic, and the teeth are nice and hard – no worries about skipping a tooth! They mount up easily, and the excess cuts off simply with a sharp knife. At this price, I’d recommend anybody who’s working in film pop at least a few of these in your bag – you never know when they might save the day, letting you use some oddball lens.

Really good for the price point
The material is more hard rubber than plastic, which makes it super simple to secure to my lenses. I line up the belt on the focus ring, then pull it taut before pressing it into the belt keeper. This makes for a super snug fitment which does not slip or wiggle when in use with my follow focus. Specializing in motorsports cinematography I’ve come to appreciate the simple design for the kind of run & gun trackside filming I do. I should note, the excess belt can either be trimmed at a length allowing fitment to your largest lens, or taped down to the belt with some gaff tape to keep it out of the way. Although I will always opt for lenses with geared focus rings, I’ve found this to be the next best for the cost.

They work as they should. Much cheaper than buying the original belts from the company my follow focus is made from.

The item works perfectly, it arrived on the date given. I’ve been using the item for few weeks now, and it seems to be able to continue doing the job for a lot more.

The work just fine but their price is a little too high for what they really are. for some lenses you need to pull quite hard to get it tight, but if you just leave it on, their is no problem.
