My family can’t get enough of this super awesome, fast, bluffing and lying game! This will make family game night the best it has ever been!

Fun and easy to learn, but can be a tad bit repetitive
Fun to play and helps improve my bluffing skills, but sometimes I feel no incentive to bluff/play the game honestly and am still able to win. The deluxe version is fun to play since you can purposefully antagonize other individuals on your team or not on your team, but the new inquisitor character has the highest potential to throw the game off its tracks if they decide to tell everyone what your characters are. I suppose that’s part of the fun! It’s easy to play multiple rounds and I’m glad that after 10+ coins you’re forced to stage a coup, because it definitely puts pressure on people since they can see how many coins you have in your pile.

Fun, low-commitment game
I don’t really grade games on artwork or durability. I just care about the game play, and this game is incredibly fun. I first played with three people and we laughed super hard while playing. It’s a bluffing game, but you aren’t actually betting, like in poker, so it’s just pure fun and doesn’t feel competitive. I’ve also played a bunch of two-player games and enjoyed that, too. I love the fact that a hand is so quick (~5 minutes), so it’s not a big commitment to start playing. You can just stop whenever.When first learning, it may seem like there are a lot of rules, but after one evening it is easy to internalize them. Anyway, the game has a bunch of summary cards to hand out to players, and the cards themselves say what they can do. What makes the game so fun is that the cards have such incomparable powers, yet in the end it’s pretty well balanced–whatever cards you start with can be a winning hand if you play it right, bluff at the right time, and aren’t too unlucky about what the other player has. You can lie flagrantly and often get away with it, but when a ridiculous bluff is uncovered, it invariably cracks everybody up. Again, because no money is at stake and you typically play a bunch of independent hands in an evening without keeping score, it’s just super light-hearted fun.My friends and I now sometimes play coup with a regular deck of cards, too, just using 10,J,Q,K,A of three suits for our 15 cards, so you don’t really *need* the official game. But you should support the brilliant people who designed this game by buying the very reasonably priced original version. Plus with the official version you’ll get to enjoy the playing cards that say what they do and the summary cards that help you learn the game and the special coup coins that feel more appropriate than poker chips.

The game is then easy to learn and interesting. We played about 3 rounds in 40 minutes, so each game doesn’t take long–about 12-14 minutes.The idea is that each player gets 2 player cards. Each player card has a different character and there are are 3 of each character that does a specific function. You play your role as one of your characters or fib about having a character you don’t have. For instance, you say, I am a Duke and will collect 3 money tokens (each turn you get tokens, the number you get is determined by your character cards or your ability to convince everyone else you have a specific card). If someone says they don’t think you are a Duke and call you out, you lose a character card if you were lying. If you weren’t, they lose a card. When you have 7 money tokens, you can assassinate another player to eliminate one of their character cards. Therefore, collecting money quickly and calling people out who you think are fibbing, is the game. The last person standing wins.There are elements of fibbing, selling, convincing, strategy, and elimination that are all part of the game. My family loves this. The game says 14+ but my 10 year old loves this game and tends to win a lot.If this sounds like fun, consider the Night of the Werewolf game as well–similar time to play, easy to do with the app on your phone and almost zero learning curve.The price is good.I would recommend.
