    Reminiscent, Yet Original
After seeing a live U.S production of Cats performed in the late 90s, I don’t think I ever saw a staged performance that had quite the effect on me as a child (that included performances of Les Misérables and Phantom of the Opera, to boot). The setting was incredible, the costumes were elaborate, the songs were powerful, and the overall production made me think of my fuzzy companions at home in a new way for quite some time. Now an adult, I watched the film on DVD and got to experience all of those beloved components of the musical once again. As far as the movie goes, I enjoyed every song and character quirk in it, from Munkustrap’s constant attention to detail to Mr. Mistofelees’.magic tricks. The casting was excellently done, with the likes of veterans Elaine Paige (Grizabella) and Sir John Mills (Gus the Theatre Cat) performing, along with Ken Page as Old Deuteronomy. Even the little-to-unknown actors like John Partridge as the sinful tom Rum Tum Tugger, the mischievous duo of Drew Varley and Jo Gibb (Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer), and Geoffrey Garratt as the ever-punctual Skimbleshanks, carried the show just as well as their seasoned contemporaries. As expected, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music is incredible and every song is a joy to listen to, especially the show-stopping renditions of “Memory” by Grizabella and Jemima.I’m a sucker for special features, and I’ll say now that The Ultimate Edition provides some VERY satisfying bits on the 2nd disc. Hearing firsthand about the uphill battle that Andrew Lloyd Webber and the rest of his team had to go through to get the original Cats musical together definitely brings a greater sense of appreciation for the film and how far it came from 1981. In addition, there’s a feature on the makeup that was interesting to watch. Finally, my only gripes with the film involve the lack of “Growltiger’s Last Stand” (an epic song in its own right), as well as a lack of subtitles for the movie when they were present on the special feature commentaries. I only mention subtitles because the accents/enunciation of some of the actors and a couple of the ensemble songs were a bit of a challenge to comprehend. In general, I’d recommend this for anyone, really. It’s such an entertaining musical that newcomers and lovers of musical theatre alike will be hooked on this film and enjoy the antics of the Jellicles for years to come.

    Cats Musical – DVD
I saw Cats performed in an stage setting years ago, and it has always been one of my favorite muscials.I loved the DVD version. True, it lacked the intimacy of the stage, but offers new dimensions including closeups and replay. I did not find the costumes “Halloweeny in garish close-up” an other reviewer did. I thought they were quite clever and well done. I also liked noticing the many cat-like gestures that I had not been able to see before (or at least remember seeing). My favorite part of musicals is the dancing and this musical’s choreography was outstanding, showing a bit of everything from jazz dance, tap dance, modern dance, and ballet. I did enjoy the skin-tight costumes and somewhat “naughty” cat-like behavior, but I’m not sure I would say this is viewing material for kids.We watched the show first and then viewed the bonus DVD with the interviews. They really added to enjoyment of the show. I highly recommend viewing the interviews and watching the background information. Now we will watch the actual show again with a greater understanding of what it took to recreate.Seems like the Brits are taking a chance and converting their musicals to video/DVD. (I also have Oklahoma with Hugh Jackman). I wish more American producers would do that and get over the stuffy notion that the stage can’t be reproduced, so why bother. We will view this DVD many many times. I can’t say that about the stage version, since I rarely get to the city to see large-scale musicals.

    Needed more “live” energy
I was stationed in England and saw “Cats” on West End in the early 80s, but didn’t understand it and don’t remember it. So watching this was like seeing it for the first time.I think we have been spoiled by the DVDs of the live shows of “Hamilton”, and even “Pee-wee on Broadway”. You need a live audience to interact with the cast, and to APPLAUD after some of those dance numbers. This was sorely missing here. Also, like some other viewers, I was annoyed by some of the editing choices. Just as one example –the closeups of Bombalurina’s and Demeter’s butts during “Macavity” were unnecessary. We could see them just fine. And the camera following Rum Tum Tugger around during his song ensured that we couldn’t see what all the other dancers were doing — the stage is a whole unit, not just one character. I wanted to see THEM too. There was too much time spent on Old Deuteronomy during the final number. I get that the rest of the cats were mostly just standing there, but I wanted to see what they were doing. I wanted to see the whole stage. And I understand that the more spectacular portions of Mr. Mistoffolees’ dance were cut out. However, maybe that’s a blessing — since after Jacob Brent performed those 24 “conjuring turns”, there would have been only awkward silence for the DVD viewer.Others have remarked about the deleted scene for Gus (Growltiger’s Last Stand); I can’t speak to that, since I don’t remember it. But I do know that Sir John Mills’ performance was touching — and amazing for a 90-year-old man. I hope I can remember my NAME at 90, much less multiple lines in a play.

Brought out in 2019 by Universal Studios, the London production is shown in very good quality (1080p widescreen & DTS-HD Master audio 5.1). Program copyright is 1998.The performance itself is just over 2 hours, and bonus features (480i standard definition / full screen / stereo sound) comprising of ‘making of’, interviews and such ran over 2 hours as well.A good mixture of clear close-up zooms for singular performers, panoramic stage segments for group dances. It felt like you had a great view throughout the show. Professionally done.Oddly, there doesn’t seem to be a standard menu function. Inserting the disk into my bluray player had it start the show right off (defaulting to 1080p video and DTS-HD audio). To access settings (captions, audio/video options), or the bonus material, I had to use my player’s ‘popup menu’ function which displayed a small menu onscreen while the performance was running. Maybe my player has something to do with the missing startup menu? I dunno…Had to use captions during a segment of the performance where the cast is quietly whispering to an enraptured audience the mysterious secret of a cat’s three distinct names. Since this was a few minutes of hushed dialog from ~20 performers without any music to keep them in sync, it sounded a bit muddled to my ears, and I couldn’t make out many words (names) whispered. The rest of the performance had voices singing beautifully with the superb 70-piece orchestra, some solos which made me…, well…, weepy.Yeah, that good.

Bought this as a secret santa gift. It took forever to arrive but luckily covid got in the way of us giving away our gifts in time lol. The dvd does work and as far as ive heard its good too. However the mail did seem to handle it with not-so-gentle-hands because the case was kinda broken when it arrived. But hey ya know what? god hates me and most of the things i order dont even arrive so i call this a great success
