Works Great!
This Cat Mate self feeder works great. I also ordered the stainless steel trays to help keep the food colder, and I thought the stainless steel would be easier for my cat to lick the moist food out of.
The unit seems to be well-made, itâs easily operable, and I think it was worth the investment. The removable parts are easy to clean as well.
Within three days, my cat has learned to use it in the middle of the night for her grazing snacks. She cannot hear the tray turning to the correct eating cup, because sheâs deaf, but she seems to really like having her grazing snacks at the ready.
Since I only use this at night, I turn it off during the daytime to save on the double AA batteries. When people use this unit, they should use it on a sturdy flat surface and allow room around it for the cat to sit or stand to eat out of the serving cups.
I have nothing but good things to say about the Cat Mate. I am glad this was invented.

Great feeder!
I have 7 cats. 3 are adult males I adopted at various times (two as strays and one from a shelter), and 4 are a litter of kittens that some neighborhood feral cat brought to my garage who I caught and are now indoors. Suffice to say, I have a lot of cats for one dude. I occasionally have to leave them overnight, so I have 6 of these feeders, a couple hopper style ones, and the petsafe 5 meal feeder that is similar to this that apparently didnât work the last time I was gone overnight.
These cat mate feeders work really well for the most part. Theyâre easy to program and work reliably on AA batteries. I like that you can use the freezer packs to serve wet food although I probably wouldnât do that if I was planning on being gone more than a day. Even my smart 5 year old cat canât get them open, and he has definitely tried.
One of these feeders had a button sensor quit working on the control pad and Iâm not sure how to fix it without opening it up. Itâs only one out of the six so I doubt itâs an issue with the design or anything. I didnât check to see if thatâs a common issue, though, and if I manage to figure out how to fix it, Iâll update here.
I do wish there was a multipack of these so I could get a few more to space out feedings, since this is the only feeder model of the billion I own that Iâm reliably sure feeds my cats on time and is the only one that works with wet food.

Excellent for dry food use. Just so-so for wet food use.
Super easy to use, program, re-program, and wash. (For those reviewers that have issues with the trays not aligning, it’s because you didn’t read the simple instructions. There is a very easy fix that re-aligns them perfectly every time. This unit is extremely user friendly.)
The unit is comprised of (i) a base that the freezer packs are inserted into, (ii) a bowl/plate that has 5 numbered compartments (numbered 0-4), which you lay on the base so that the compartment numbers on the bowl/plate match up with the corresponding numbers on the base, and (iii) a lid that has a hole cut out of it for one compartment only. The first compartment (number 0) is exposed, which you can consider the “starter” compartment (leaving it empty, or filling it with food if you want to); the other 4 compartments are covered by the lid. You can set the timer for one, two, three, or four compartments. It remembers your programs, so you don’t have to reset again, or you can remove a timer (not using that compartment) or adjust a compartment’s timer very easily. When the programmed time arrives, the bowl/plate rotates inside and exposes its corresponding compartment and your pet can eat the food from it. There is not a bell or an alarm. The pet hears the unit begin to rotate. They get used to the sound in a couple days, and then the rotating sound trains them that it’s chow time. It’s very simple and works great.
However, for wet food, this unit is good up to about 5 hours as that’s about as long as the thin freezer packs will keep the food cool (this review is written during the winter – I suspect the freezer packs will last a shorter time during summer months). Because I don’t trust wet food sitting at room temperate for hours, I end up only using one or two of the compartments. For example, if I want to leave my house at noon and come home at 9pm, that means I can program feedings until only about 5pm, and as a result the cats don’t get fed from about 5pm until I get home at 9pm. It is better to have one or two feedings while I’m out than none though. If you feed your pet a combo of wet and dry food, the unit will be great for you because you can give them one or two wet feedings at the beginning and then follow with dry feedings and not have to worry about bacteria.
The rest of this review is in regards to cats only:
Initially, the cats are startled by the unit moving, and are, of course, curious cats but not sure what to do with the thing. If they don’t get it, just kind of put their face by the food compartment and they’ll realize it’s food and eat up.
They can smell the food in the other unexposed compartments and if they want it, they will try to get it – although they cannot break into the unit. One very determined kitty did scratch up the lid trying though – luckily, this is good, thick, quality plastic so their efforts were in vain other than cosmetically damaging the unit.
The cat’s head kind goes into the compartment when they eat, and their whiskers will smush against the sides of the compartment. Although the compartments are very easy to wash, there’s a bit of a design flaw – the bottom edges of the compartments are too right-angled and food gets pushed up to the edges and is hard for the cats to get at. It would be better if the compartments were designed with scooped edges. So the cats end up eating as much as they can get to, and then literally have to walk around the unit to eat more, then walk around the unit again to eat more – so they have to “work” for their food. If they don’t want to work so hard, there ends up being uneaten food at the edges.
I don’t see what happens because I’m gone, but a few times the unit was moved a few feet away from where I placed it. I don’t know if one of my cats is trying hard to get to the other compartment’s foods before it’s time, or if the unit is getting pushed around while they are trying hard to eat the food from the bottom edges. The unit has never been tipped over though.
Overall, this is a great unit and I recommend it.

Great, well-made product. Works best for single dog.
I really like this product. This product is amazingly well-made, well-designed, and easy to clean.. Itâs easy to fill, easy to program and has a great variability. I tried the ice packs for a day, and it kept my food, cool, and fresh for the dogs. I also got the addition of the stainless silver inserts, and would highly recommend them. They are individual stainless steel inserts, and it makes it much easier to fill, rearrange in the holder, and clean.
It did not take my dogs long to learn to use it, or what the turning sound meant.
When you have multiple meals in the container, they can smell them, and my dogs were very curious about trying to get into the other meals. My dogs are small. If you have large dogs, they might be able to break in.
My only CAUTION is, this may not be good for multiple dogs. I have two litter mates. They get along very well. However, this caused them to exhibit food aggression. The primary problem is no matter how you set the clocks, the units do NOT open at the same time. That made my larger of the two siblings be able to get to one unit, eat the food, and then go guard the other unit until it opened 15 seconds later. So, the smaller of the two dogs didnât get food. (I was very careful, and had both units programming at the same time; hitting the buttons on both units at the same time, to make sure they were synced.) After resetting it multiple times, I had to give up. If your animals occupy separate rooms when youâre gone, you would be fine.
So, despite the fact that I couldnât use them for my dogs, if you have one dog, or if you have 2 dogs that are not particularly food motivated, they would probably work fine for you.

I liked that you can feed both dry and wet cat food in the timed servings. The ice pack is a great feature for keeping the wet food fresh. I read two independent online reviews of the product, and each one rated the Cat Mate among the top of the 8-10 products that were tested in each review. As suggested in the instructions, I programmed the two timed servings and tested them while we were home. The dish moved at the correct time to reveal each timed serving. I liked that it was easy and intuitive to program the current time and the times for the two servings.

My cat is a BIG foodie and loves to munch down all of his food at once and therefor also sometime vomits because of it. I have set this to âturnâ while I am at work so that he can eat smaller portions but through out the day and it has worked great. The cooler is also a nice feature since I can keep the wet food fresh through out the day.

Bisher bin ich sehr zufrieden mit dem Automaten, hatte keine Probleme und die Katzen freuen sich über regelmäÃiges Essen. Die Einzelteile sind leicht zu reinigen und die Bedienung ist sehr einfach. Wenn die Schale für das Essen nicht bei einer Rotation eingelegt ist, kann es jedoch sein, dass die Ãffnung nicht mehr über einer der Schälchen ist. Hier steht zwar auf der Schale man solle nicht drehen und neu ausrichten, jedoch hatte ich bisher kein Problem dadurch.
