Meater 2: A Reliable Upgrade for the Modern Kitchen
As a cooking enthusiast whoâs tried a variety of thermometers over the years, from instant-read classics to innovative smart devices, Iâve found the Meater 2 to be the reliable, precise tool I always reach for when cooking any protein. Iâve trusted dependable standbys like the Lavatools PX1D (Javelin PRO Duo) and its more compact sibling, the PT12. My journey into âsmartâ thermometers began over a decade ago with Supermechanicalâs Kickstarter-backed wired thermometer, Range. When wireless technology became available, I quickly adopted the original Meater. Naturally, I was eager to see what the Meater 2 would bring to the table, and it hasnât disappointed. When I first opened the box, the all-caps âPLUSâ branding stood out, boldly heralding Meaterâs newest contender in the increasingly crowded smart kitchen space. The packaging felt appropriately premium for its price point, with matte recyclable paperboard that aligns with their eco-friendly vibe, further evidenced by the use of sustainable bamboo for the charging block. Among the various quick start guides and instructions that Iâll never read, one leaflet caught my eyeâa calibration certificate, complete with an impressively embossed seal and listed âcalibration uncertaintyââa nod to the companyâs emphasis on precision and accuracy.Comparing the Meater 2 to the original, the upgrades are clear. The accuracy in internal temperature readings has been noticeably improved, with a differential of just a degree or two compared to my instant-read thermometers, making it far more reliable for precise cooking. While thereâs still some variability, itâs a definite step up from the original, especially in terms of nailing those internal readings. The heat tolerance has also been increased, with the Meater 2 now capable of withstanding ambient temperatures up to 1000°Fâsomething that puts my mind at ease as I shove a ribeye into my Ooni oven that tops out at around 950°F.Setting up the Meater 2 was refreshingly straightforward, especially for someone familiar with the first-generation thermometer. Thereâs no need to download a new appâeverything synced seamlessly, and the prompts were clear and intuitive. The pairing process was so simple that even my parents could probably handle itâthough I donât have the patience to actually test that theory. The app has always been user-friendly, and the familiar interface continues to deliver. A thoughtful touch I noticed is the warning modal when your phone is on silent mode. Without this feature, you could easily end up with a burnt roast while the app silently and futilely tries to alert youâfar too lateâthat your dinner has already been charred beyond recognition. The addition of the Apple Watch app is a game-changer for me. Itâs unrealistic to expect that youâd keep your phone unlocked, staring at the Meater app for two hoursâinstead, youâll likely be doomscrolling through your news feed or looking at recipes youâll never cook. Having the remaining cook time displayed on my wrist is a huge convenience, especially when youâre juggling a house full of guests, wrangling runaway toddlers, or chasing after dogs whoâve snatched food off the table. In terms of performance, the Meater 2 has been consistently reliable. The app takes a few minutes to calibrate and tune into your ambient, target, and internal temperatures, but once itâs set, it works well. The âblack boxâ algorithmâwhatever it isâhas done a great job of ensuring my meats are cooked to the desired doneness. Whether Iâm preparing a thick brisket or a thin chicken breast, this thermometer has consistently delivered accurate results.Battery life is solid, and the thermometer stores and charges easily in its bamboo block, which also functions as a refrigerator magnet, keeping the Meater 2 conveniently accessible in the kitchen. The build quality is impressiveâsleek and refined, with a combination of metal and bamboo that complements most kitchen designs. Itâs not just a cooking tool; itâs a statement piece. That statement being, âI have a Meater 2 Plus smart thermometer tool.âOverall, the Meater 2 is a valuable tool for both tech enthusiasts and home cooks. Itâs packed with useful features and has a track record of quality, making it a worthy addition to your kitchen.

Perfect
I had the original meater and it left alot to be desired. It would frequently lose connection with my phone and when it did, there was no indication that it did. You would assume it was still at the last temperature. Secondly it died on me just 6 months later and meaters customer service wouldnt help me or even provide so much as discount to buy a new one. I was reluctant to buy the meater 2, because of that bad experience. There are many types of bluetooth thermometers now and some less expensive. I actually had the opportunity to beta test the Ninja. Almost all of the new thermometers, thanks to the latest Bluetooth technology are pretty darn good and accurate. What sets Meater apart and worth the extra money is its higher temperature rating, its thin design, its battery life and its app. It really makes cooking a simple process. I’ve only used it a couple of times now, so I cant judge its long term use. Im hoping it lasts way longer than my first one. Compared to the others out there, this is leaps and bounds over the competition, worth any small premium you might pay for serious cooks. If you’re on a budget, really any of the new ones that have bluetooth 5.2 will do just fine but youll be giving up some serious quality differences.

Slow, Poor Battery Life, Unreliable, Expensive, Broke after 2 months.
I’ve used this for several months and I’ve been annoyed by it in multiple different ways each time. Firstly, the fact that the stationary base is battery powered and not even rechargeable is baffling. It is impressive that the base and probe are maintained by the AAA battery for so long and the probe is recharged via the same battery, but beyond that, I would much rather prefer a powered base where I don’t need to worry about keeping AAA batteries around for.The probe is extremely slow, it’s not an instant read thermometer and its still FAR slower than an old mercury or standard thermometer. It takes OVER an hour for the ambient temperature to read anything remotely close to what the actual cooking temp was over 30 minutes ago…To compound that, the ETAs it provides are completely fabricated and only lure you into a false sense of the remaining time, it’s typically off massive margins. For example with ribs, even though it may be sitting in a smoker at 250f, it will claim the ambient temp is 140f(after an hour into the cook), far lower than the 205f target, yet still give an ETA of 45 minutes even though it will nearly always be a 4+ hour cook. If it was creating an ETA based off of the facts that it believes are true, the ETA would be infinite in that case as it wouldn’t be possible to bring the food to the proper temp if the ambient temp was that low, therefor it must have some sort of code written specifically to take wild stabs in the dark based on the type of cook it is.The Meater app alarms are astonishingly annoying, which is understandable if something requires your attention for stuff like “Take the food off heat” notifications, but it does it for everything and anything. Did the ETA change? It spam an alarm, vibration, and notification every couple of seconds until you open the app and acknowledge the notification. It treats every little notification as if it’s a dire emergency and it’s a huge drain on my phone battery to cook with this thing from the abundant useless notifications alone.Food I’ve cooked with this has ALWAYS been overcooked, no exceptions. It will try to predict when to remove food from heat in hopes that it will hit your target during the resting period, but usually this happens when it’s 1-2 degrees before the target temp and the app will still gladly tell me that the food actually went 10-15f higher than the target every time during the rest period. If you want to cook food right, you are required to disobey the app.Lastly, my meater Pro 2 Plus is already broken. I purchased at the beginning of August 2024, and on September 1st I had noticed that it disconnected during a cook. I’ve used this maybe 15 times since I’ve purchased it and it’s already garbage. The probe only has maybe 10-15 minutes of battery life on each use now. I have tried replacing the AAA battery in the base, thoroughly cleaned the probe to ensure good clean electrical contact between the probe and the base so it can recharge, and come today, I start another cook only for it to disconnect and become completely useless in less than 15 minutes into the cook.I was naive enough to also buy my Dad one of these for Father’s Day, and come to find out, he also used his once and immediately hated it and just didn’t tell me until I had mentioned mine failed. Huge waste of money, but at least I know how low the bar can be when it comes to wireless thermometers, I have joy knowing that the next one I purchase will at least not have as many faults as this one has.

This thermometer is without doubt the best one I have ever purchased. It allows you, for example, to slow cook the protein of your choice to absolute perfection. I have had this device for almost two months and have never had a less than a perfect outcome regardless of the heat source eg. oven, BBQ or smoker etc. The quality is truly excellent and the technology is creative and functional. The design and engineering are truly impressive from the probe, the Bluetooth functionality, the app to the container that houses everything. It is definitely worth the price. You will not be disappointed, and, you will eagerly show your friends how you presented them with that perfect dinner.
