I bought a VL-81 LED Video Light w Softbox, and the price isn’t wildly different, I think that they’re the same price, but the attention to detail is a world of a difference.SmallRig’s light has a cold shoe on each side of the light, which is SO helpful, beyond helpful. The dial on the back is fluid and functional, you’re not confused about which is brightness and which is color temperature, they just alternate. The light is beautiful, even, soft, the diffuser works perfectly.The light doesn’t feel cheap, or light, but it’s not heavy either.

Better than expected for the compact size and price.
Expectations are important for a light like this. What I found was as a secondary fill light to help reduce shadows on faces during dusk/dawn shooting this worked very well. It’s not a giant spotlight and will not light up a room so don’t expect that. But for the size and price it delivered more light than I expected and came in handy on shoots. Ability to adjust the warmth and brightness is welcome and the battery life seemed as good or better than I needed. I appreciate the built in mounting options as well.

Bright, color tuneable
Has a fairly uniform bright emitting surface. Intuitive easy controls for on/off, brightness, & color temperature. Very light weight & compact. I like the fact that they csn be attached to each other on 3 sodes to form a larger/bright surface. Markings on the brightness/color temp dial to easily reproduce a prior setting would have beee handy, but I didn’t take away a star for that. Just a suggestion for the manufacturer for a simple & very useful improvement.

First One Showed Up DOA Second One Is Perfect
Update: I received another from Amazon the next day and the seller also reached out to make things right. Amazing customer service! This thing is simple, very bright at its brightest (but also dimmable), and lightweight. I haven’t tested the battery life but it’ll be fine for meetings and stuff that I need it for. I only wish the charger came out of the bottom and not the top so I could use it while charging. The only thing that’s a problem is that you can’t use a fast charger with it. It wouldn’t charge with my phone charger or the PD ports on my PC so I have to use a traditional block to charge it. Although annoying, it’s not a deal breaker. Great light. Highly recommend!Just got this and tried to turn it on…nothing. Thought it might be dead so I plugged it in…nothing. I’ve started a replacement return and will update after it comes. But this this is all plastic. Sturdiness will probably not be highly rated but it’s also super light, which is nice if it’s sitting on your rig. So there’s the trade-off. Most reviews and videos were good. I’m hoping the new one works!

stops charging
Uses cheap CL4056D charging IC that gets hot. My issue was it wouldn’t charge when plugged in. Took it apart, unplugged the battery and reconnected it, then it started to work again. Not sure for how long though.The battery also doesn’t have any protection, will melt wires if shorted. The light board itself looks alright. Could possibly replace the charging IC with a genuine one along with a protected battery but at that point you’re spending more than the cost of the light.

Update: 11/04/2024 – I contacted the seller about the issue below, and they responded promptly. They sent me a replacement despite the past Amazon return date. Wow! This is definitely the type of seller I would do business with again. Changed the 1 star to 5.Didnât use the light until today. Went to charge it and after a few minutes, i smell a burning plastic. I took it out of the charger right away. Even when not charging, the unit keeps getting hot. To my curiosity, I opened up the unit to see whatâs going on. The board is still getting hot so disconnected the battery. Itâs past the return date, however, this is, I think dangerous.

Perfect for soft natural light effect in nature photography. Attached to end of selfie stick for manouverability. Battery life seems good, and changing between light temperatures reasonably easy. Small and portable, fits in pocket.
