The beloved humorist delivers a “winsome assortment of anecdotes and essays on fishing, tenting, searching and different outside actions and catastrophes” (Publishers Weekly).
Overflowing along with his trademark outdoorsman’s wit, Patrick F. McManus’s latest assortment ponders the unusual attract of the RV, the existential implications of being misplaced, the baffling tendency of animals to outsmart those that want to hunt them, and the singular pleasure of doubling the scale of each fish one doesn’t really catch.
Combining the curmudgeonly voice of Dave Barry and the sly humor of Garrison Keillor, McManus brilliantly captures the on a regular basis absurdities that comprise our existence. Alongside his humor, McManus’s inimitable imaginative and prescient constantly evokes a childlike surprise on the pure world. Even when we’re working low on meals, the compass is damaged, and we’re pretty sure we’ve simply noticed a household of Sasquatches frolicking within the treetops, The Bear within the Attic makes the outside appear irresistible.

Good; at the same time miss old stuff
Nothing (to me) beats George Irving’s narration of McManus old stuff. I bought this set on a gamble that some of the stories would be good, and some are. I rate it four stars which is pretty good but I miss the old stuff and the wonderful narration of Irving.

Finally, a new McManus Book!!!!
It has been several years since Pat McManus published a book of new stories. His recent books have been either anthologies combining the material from other books, or in one case, a how-to book on humor writing development. This book is more of the same amazing stories you’ve grown to know and love from the mind of Patrick McManus, most of which were originally featured in the pages of Outdoor Life magazine. It includes more stories originating in “Blight,” Idaho, of Rancid Crabtree, Crazy Eddie Muldoon, (and Mr. Muldoon) Mrs. Swisher, and a bear that hibernates in the attic.Highly recommended for the outdoor fan, or for the general McManus fan, such as myself.

Pure Pleasure Reading
I’ve always loved Pat McManus and was shocked to find one of his books that I had never read. Whether it was one of his humor articles in Outdoor Life or Field and Stream, one of his collections of essays or Sheriff Bo Tulley mysteries, I greedily read and enjoyed them all.

McManus is still funny, I grew up reading his books
McManus is still funny, I grew up reading his books. But you can tell that he’s starting to get old and is running out of stories. If it is you first McManus book, go get The Grasshopper Trap

You have got the love this author. McManus has a way of telling a story with just enough exageration to it that you will find yourself laughing out of loud, and often time having tears running down your face from laughing. What a great story teller! You can’t read his books in public otherwise peoples will thing that you have gone mad when they see you have a gut busting laughter out of nowhere. It’s a great gift idea too for those around you that have a great sense of humour. I love all of his books, got them all and have purchases many of them to give as gifts. Each and every time, those who received them as a gift were ecstatic.
