Recently, I got my hands on the Baofeng UV-5RM, an upgraded version of the popular UV-5R.The performance is very impressive. During a recent hiking trip in a remote area, I was able to communicate effectively with my friends, even though we were 5 miles apart. The Good:-Tested and confirmed that each radio outputs 10 watts of power on VHF and UHF bands as labeled.-Color Screen-2200mAh battery pack is greater than what comes stock with a UV-5R-Lots of extra goodies in the pack including tacticool antenna.The Bad:Absolutely FAILS the FCC transmit standard for amateur radio use, generating several harmonics on transmit causing spurious emissions that at best could create some slight noise on other frequencies or at worst cause harmful interference that would get you a knock on your door by the FCC and maybe a fine. Yes, they do that. I’d rather not get their attention.The Baofeng UV-5R was cleaned up after some time and is fine to use. The same with the UV-9R Pro and a few other models, yet these newer generation of radios all seem to have very dirty transmit.Once they clean them up, they’ll be a great addition to your HT lineup, but until that time, avoid.

This radio works very well has a lot of cool features like where you can monitor the weather radios and is very easy to program using the PC code plug that you can download on the Baofeng website or you can use chirp I recommend this radio to anyone who holds a ham radio licenses or a gmrs licenses. The radio seems to do right around 8 watts while testing it on a SWR meter. It also comes with a lot of stuff like a external mic, longer military style antenna both of these items seem to work very well so overall the radio is a great buy I would recommend theses radios to anyone.

Useful to have around during an emergency
I have another Baofeng radio. They’ve come a long way in quality and this radio is as well-built and performs as well as some of the more expensive brands in the market. This radio came in handy for me during the California wildfires, when our power was shut off for “public safety,” taking the cable Internet and my VOIP with it. Although I wasn’t at risk from the fire, it was nice to be able to scan different frequencies from my living room and listen in on what was happening around me.Additionally, I did test the range on it and was able to talk with my neighbor about three miles away.So in my opinion this radio definitely has its uses, it works well, and is affordable. Recommended.

Licensed Ham radio here.Please note, these are not walkie-talkies. You don’t need a license to own one or listen, but you will a license and FCC-issued call sign to transmit.I bought one of these last year to replace my UV-5R. It’s a serious improvement. Build quality is just as solid as the 5R. It’s a tri-band, so you get the VHF, UHF, and 1.25 meter (220 MHz) frequency ranges. It’s as easy to use as most HTs. Battery life is pretty good, expecially considering that you’re putting out 10 watts.Value for money – what makes this worth it is the price. You’re getting two radios, chargers, batteries, rubber ducky antennas (OK).PLUS you’re getting the foldable tactical antennas which do compare to my Nagoya whip AND the programming cable. Add it all up individually, and you’ll see the value.The external mic is junk, you can throw that away.The reason I got these is to have a radio in the house, another in my car, and one in my go bag. Ham radio is an addiction!
