Rumble Fish (Criterion Assortment)

On this deeply private story of estrangement and reconciliation between two rebellious brothers, set in a dreamlike and timeless Tulsa, Francis Ford Coppola offers mythic dimensions to intimate, painful feelings. After releasing the classically styled The Outsiders earlier the identical yr, the director returned to the work of S. E. Hinton, this time with a self-described “artwork movie for youngsters.” Graced with a outstanding solid headed by Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, and Diane Lane; haunting black-and-white visuals that hark again to German expressionism and ahead to Coppola’s personal Tetro; and a strong, percussive rating by Stewart Copeland that underscores the film’s romantic fatalism, Rumble Fish pulsates all through with real love and dread.

    Like a dream
What a work of art! I LOVED this film. The camera angles, the style, the feel, the vibe…sure…the story isn’t incredibly complex, but Coppola was looking to evoke a mood. Dennis Hopper is always superb…a fetching Diane Lane, a brooding and aloof Mickey Rourke…a young Nick Cage…brilliantly captured cinematography…please offer more like this Amazon.

    A truely outstanding film!!!
This is a extraordinary film, one that should be shown in all film making schools !!! It shows how Black & White film accentuates textures & it’s very limited use of color is brilliant !!! The musical score is outstanding showcasing Stewart Copeland’s genius!!! I feel Stewart Copeland could easily be placed in a list of the top 20 Drummers of all time…possibly in the top 10 !!! I would like to think that High School aged children would be able to learn from this film …but I find that even many young adults don’t seem to have the patients to enjoy cerebral films being conditioned to spoon fed entertainment with high explosives over the top special effects & very simple storylines. I see this reflected in the ratings and comments of the movie ” Logan” that is filled with intense emotional action that many either can’t connect with or don’t care. The emotional action in ” Rumble Fish” outshines its physical action which there is plenty of coming from well developed complex characters. But this only comes through to those that pay close attention to the dialogue & understand it. But then again maybe I am just to old actually remembering a time when gangs didn’t use automatic guns. One thing is for sure when S.E. Hinton wrote her classic stories you get the feeling she was very close to her subject matter!!! Mickey Rourke’s acting is incredibly mature in this film often stealing the scene without saying a word, just a subtle tilt of the head and a suggestion of a grin. This is one of those rare occasions when every aspect of the movie making process is at its best!!! Just writing this review makes me want to watch the film again!!!

    A Must Own
I always trip this movie bombed. I think it’s one of those flicks you have to see while you drink beer.Fantastically shot and Dillion and Rourke and even Hopper all slay. If you own the Outsiders, which I do, you kind of have to get this also, though they are Very different movies. This one is more of an art film, before there were art films.

satisfyingly complex masterpiece of brotherhood and finding oneself
It’s humbling writing a review for a masterpiece of film.Instead of giving a series of gushing statements I’ll simply say that while most films are meant to evoke romance, thrill, intensity (it’s fair to say that sums up 90% of American cinema each year) Rumble Fish stirs complex and far more deeply satisfying emotions. On the surface, this is a movie about a troubled young man living a rebellious and violent life living in the shadow of the legendary Motorcycle Boy, his brother. But when his brother, the Motorcycle Boy, returns to the town he is a changed man, pensive and seemingly distant. The viewer comes to understand that while he was away, he found a deep understanding about himself but that the price for gaining his wisdom requires sacrifice and wrestling with our passions and desires. It’s deeply personal but the tale of brotherhood and growing up with your idol is a theme so common (how many of us grew up with a beloved brother?) and yet so rarely captured.Other themes explored: the nature of violence and peace, authority and oppression, small town escapism, self-awakening, growing up, finding oneself.Worth noting is that the movie is filmed in black and white except for a few select moments. There are both thematic reasons (above) and it also is revealed there is another reason related to the characters of the movie. In the end, the movie will leave you feeling meditative, jarred and yet finding a peace and transcendence you won’t get from your typical Hollywood fare. It may even inspire you to depart on your own journey to find yourself and you will return with appreciation for the sibling love that shaped you.

    Masterpiece
I first saw this movie in 1983 when I was 18. I’m a math science engineering type, not the artsy type. But this movie grabbed me in an artsy kind of way if that makes any sense. Fantastic cast , cinematography, music, characters, plot not as strong as those but the whole thing really hangs together. Just watched it again after almost 40 years and had the same reaction, what does that tell you. At the same time my friend when I first watched it was kind of “meh”. So to each their own. Ps. I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to write this one.
