Pure subdued genius
I can watch it over and over again. Fun for the whole family. A perfect introduction of slightly off clittered avant-garde.

What can you say?
This is a classic to people who even know what this is. Long ago, I watched this on cable late at night and really loved the program. Nice to be able to find this and remember a time not long ago which was so much better.

COMEDY THAT INCLUDES TIPS ON FLY-CASTING!!!!!
The only thing more hilarious and goofier the this outdoor comedy of errors and mis-communication (with a smooth and peculiar narrator)….are theACTUAL REVIEWS OF HUMANS THAT THOUGHT THIS WAS A REAL FISHING SHOW!!!!!!…?…..Americans should try reading every now and then- these probably the same mouth-breathers that will pay to see SPIDERMAN/SUPERMAN movies 6 times ( i lost count) in the last five years.Although the too-brief show was really an accurate depiction of how men prefer the ‘idea’ of the rugged outdoors more then actually physically doing it…..IT’S COLD OUT THERE!!!!!!

Go Fish!
Fishing with John is in the John Lurie/Tom Waits/Jim Jaramusch realm. It showed on IFC. That’s where I first saw it. There’s not many “TV” related things that I like, but this is one. It contains stories, plain and simple. Deadpan humor. Also the director who wrote “Smoke” comes to mind, Wayne Wang?? I would add this to the list of good TV. And there aint’ much… So cool to have it all on DVD instead of VHS. Fishing With John – Criterion Collection

Not for Everyone, but Wildly Hilarious!
I’ve watched Fishing with John with several different groups of people, and it is either met with blank stares or wild, uncontrollable laughter. I guess that’s to be expected when you’re talking about a pseudo-fake fishing show! Note that if you’re looking for a real fishing documentary or fishing instructional, then you’re in the wrong place. You’re not getting fishing information, but you are getting some wildly creative humor. If you do take the plunge on this great collection, make sure to watch the ice fishing episode twice – it’s my favorite episode and even better the second time around.

Classic!
Needed this for my collection! So classic!

Great but not a typical fishing show.
It’s not for everyone. I love to fish but these episodes aren’t really about catching fish (neither John nor any of the guests knows how to catch fish), it’s about getting two real characters out on the water and the conversation (or lack thereof). I liked them all but the Willem Dafoe one is my favorites. If you want to watch people catch big fish it’s not for you.

Strange and very compelling
Warning: Don’t buy this if you’re into traditional fishing shows. This isn’t what you what. This is pure comic genius, yes, and very oddball, yes, but it’s not Harold Ensley. John Lurie is an inspired nutcase, taking the likes of Tom Waits and the late Dennis Hopper fishing in strange locales. Waits gets angry at one point. Hopper … well, he spends his time being Dennis Hopper. I missed this show when it was on (briefly). Thanks to the Criterion Collection for preserving it.

I bought it for him and because I love Jim Jarmusch films, but all the episodes are classic. I think John should pick up his fishing rod and camera again in the future.

This is a one off. It’s Marmite. You’ll love it or hate it. I love it. It’s good for a watch any time of day and takes you to a happy chilled out place. John, like his friends, was one of a kind. A good friend has promised to tell John’s ‘The Cow and the Ant’ story at my funeral. Which is nice. The narrator is as much a part of the fun, as the guys featured in each episode.Only sorry that nobody has remastered this and upscaled it some. On the other hand, the fuzziness gives it a time relevant appeal. They can wreck things sometimes, by making them super sharp, instead of letting the quality of the story speak for itself. Oh, just get it already!

My 6-1/2 year old daughter has never been fishing. She loves these shows. If I say I want to watch ‘Fishing With John’ instead of The Simpsons she says “OK!” instead of “NOOOOOOOOO!” We sing the catchy theme song a lot now too! John….you listening?

A collection of 6 twenty-odd minute films of the most free-form documentary you are likely to see. True, there is some fishing, but that is secondary to the relationships and conversations between host John Lurie and his guests. Scored with Lurie’s own laid-back jazz music and featuring hilarious narration, this is certainly one for lovers of cult movies and musicians, rather than lovers of carp, swim-feeders and Bob Nudd. I urge you to check it out, although my copy appears to be missing episode 5, something that I will have to contact Amazon about. Watch and laugh and laugh and laugh….
