Game changer, delivers strong wifi
I have a 70 ft long ranch, with basement. Netgear router upstairs reaches whole house, including most of basement. But the basement family room, furthest distance and downstairs from the router, was not able to get a strong signal for video on tv. Bought this extender, placed it in the basement. Easy setup, and extender has given me 100mbs anywhere.. anywhere up stairs and anywhere in the basement. Simple setup, great wifi generator, seamless signal, great price. Buy a Netgear router and compatible Netgear mesh extender…you’ll be glad you did.

Quick, easy setup and amazing results.
Setup literally couldn’t be easier or faster. Download app, register, plug it in, turn it on, select your existing Wifi name(s), and voila – done. 5 minutes. And this worked with a 12 year old Netgear router.App has some useful utilities too.

Works well but some gotchas
I bought this wifi mesh extender to replace an old range extender that was not “mesh” capable. The old extender required me to set it up with new names (SSID’s) for the extended 2G and 5G wifi networks in my house. It “sort of” worked but depending on where I was in the house I had to force phones, laptops, tablets, etc to connect to the base or extended network for best performance. My house has a masonry walls between the room with the Spectrum router and back bedrooms significantly reducing the signal strength of the 5G wifi network without an extender. a Full mesh router replacement is at least double the cost of this Netgear mesh extender and seemed to be overkill so I decided to try it.The GOOD news. When installed it works as advertised. It gives me strong 5G and 2G wifi signals throughout my house with a single name (SSID) for each. No longer do I have to manually change the network on devices and they connect and stay seamlessly connected when moving between rooms. A signal strength meter on my phone shows good signal strength throughout the house. My ISP is Spectrum who advertises 100+ gb internet speeds in my area. A speed test run on my tablet from the farthest point from the Spectrum router shows well over that. The GOTCHAS I ran into. These may be particular to my setup and Spectrum ISP provider so your mileage may vary. First I tried setting the router up with the app they recommend on my phone. When the app got to the screen where it asks for the SSID and password for the WIFI networks it failed with the error that the password was incorrect. I tried several times verifying I had not mistyped the password but no joy. So I went to my windows 1o laptop and followed the instructions in the online guide for setting it up from there. Thie password was accepted and it got to a screen where it seemed to be saving its configuration and hung. And hung. And hung. Started over and still no joy.ENTER CUSTOMER SERVICE. I went to their web page for help and started a chat. The chat responded quickly and asked for my phone number and someone called me within 2 or 3 minutes. They had me connect my laptop to then and they walked through the settings. The tech found my problem when attempting to access my Spectrum router. He explained that while I had security software on my devices I did not have any firewall settings enabled on my Spectrum router. I was told the Netgear router detects the lack of a firewall and will not connect to an insecure router. OK, how do I fix this? I was told Netgear would fix this but it would cost me $120 service charge. OK I said, I’ll look into it myself and decide if I can fix it myself or I’ll return the extender to Amazon.I googled for information about my Spectrum router and found out how to log into as its administrator. Once logged in it had a nice graphical screen for settings including “access control”. There is a tab there for firewall, and yes indeed it was set to no firewall. I picked a level of firewall protection that looked appropriate for me and logged off. Back to the configuration of the Netgear extender and VOILA! Everything worked… both networks extended with the same network name as on the Spectrum router, and all the Good News in the section above!Hope this is helpful to others that may have the same or similar issues with their ISP provided router. I fault NETGEAR for not explaining in any documentation I could find on line or in the packaging about the need for the firewall to be configured on the ISP provided router. Of course a firewall at the entrance to your home network is a good idea (necessity) regardless of the security you have on individual devices so I have no issue with the requirement. But NETGEAR at least prominently document it. I fault SPECTRUM for not making it clear to me via their installers and their documentation that I even HAD a firewall on the router they gave me and recommending or insisting on some level of configuration.

If you have any IT skills, Just Avoid this one…
Important Note: When I went to write this review, I noticed that the product I received did not match the image of the item. The Netgear WiFi Mesh Range Extender EX6400 arrived in an unmarred, well packaged container. I proceeded to take the device out of the box and read the one sided, quarter page of instructions. Allow me to quote…Download the AppConnect your DeviceDo More with the AppLike a fool, I followed the provided instructions and downloaded the supposedly required app (see links below). Once this was fully installed, I was greeted with a simple, uninformative, and more or less useless interface…Selecting the first option showed me that my devices had failed to connect.Selecting the second told me my internet speed was GREAT, if fact, better than rated from the router…The third did a great job of emulating a 10 year old appAnd the fourth took me to a menu that was more than useless…Considering the “Device Manager” tab didn’t list any of my devices, I decided to check out the last tab labeled “WiFi Settings”. This took me to a menu that said, and I quote, “WiFi Networks”. No other options or descriptions were available, so I decided to change the listed name to see if I could find it and connect.Let me take just a moment to complain that I spend my professional life in the world of IT. I have seen quality UIs and I have seen UIs that were probably designed to convolute. This was another level… I swear that a drunk chick-a-dee could have done a better job of cobbling together something, ANYTHING, of logical value… Literally any more words woulda helped…Once I made the mistake of changing the WiFi name, lets just say that certain spinning objects, and certain kinds of bio-hazard level waste happened to interact, violently. I suppose the one bit of good news was that I could see the networks now… But when I connected to them, I was had no connection, and no automatic redirect occurred. Feeling a bit defeated with my new purchase, I made the next mistake of this escapade and engaged support… It would have been easier to just google random words to find an answer. After 40 minutes and multiple instances of connection issues, the agent FINALLY sent me technical documentation to follow. I just want to mention, I requested documentation at the beginning of the conversation, because NO PART OF ME WANTS TO SPEND 40 MINUTES CHATTING WITH SOMEONE! Don’t get me wrong, you might be the coolest Guyo/Gurlo on planet earth, but I would rather spend that time digging my own eyes out, compared to working through basic troubleshooting with someone over chat…This documentation mentioned a certain web address… A web address that was not mentioned on the app, a web address that was not referred to on the documentation, and a web address that wasn’t THE *FIRST* option for troubleshooting… Would you like to know what this magical address was?IT WAS THE ADMIN PAGE FOR THE RANGE EXTENDER! (Please listen, this page can accomplish anything and everything that the junky, useless, freezy app can)http://mywifiext.local/ (Without Internet)http://mywifiext/status.htm (With Internet)Once I received this REQUIRED information, it was a breeze… I was able to google specific terms, change specific settings, and ensure I was able to retain connection to my Range Extender, but it was all too good to be true…Two days later, the RANGE EXTENDER decided that a dedicated internet connection was probably optional… Reliable connectivity went the way of the dino, apparently setting the pace for the rest of the Range Extender. Bye-bye Range Extender, bye-bye connection issue, bye-bye headache… Really hope no one else is tricked by this…Something I want to mention before concluding this review, my support agent didn’t seem lazy, or disinterested, or distracted. They seemed to be following a script. It felt like I was just another “customer” on a conveyer belt. If Netgear chooses to employ technical support, then their support should be technical, not customary focused.
