Fun things to do
The person to whom it was a gift for really enjoyed it. Hard to crack the rocks, obviously! But nice stones when opened. Great for a person who is a rock hound! Fun kit.

Not easy to open! But very fun!
This set provided a lot of entertainment for us. Some of the geodes are very beautiful. A couple of them seemed to be duds, but it was still worth the price and the effort. Smashing them was fun but not really a kid activity. The adults did most of the work! But it was a family effort with a nice surprise inside each geode. I would recommend it as a gift for kids (or adults). Our 8 year old did some smashing with the hammer, but the chisel method (to get a cleaner break, the hope is) is definitely for an older kid or adult.

Great For A Young Beginner
For what it is, I’d give it four stars. I think that it’s a great kit for a young beginner. The reason why I didn’t give it five stars is because the majority of the geodes that were supposed to have crystals were solid all of the way through. Out of the fifteen that came, only three had a hollowed out center. Of the ones that had crystals in them, the majority (50%+) of the geode was not crystal formation on the inside. I feel like I ended up with more gravel for my driveway than something cool to look at. The pyrite geodes were pretty cool, once cracked they reveal some interesting looking formations. There was a pinkish looking one that seemed like a concretion which I have yet to identify. That being said, not all was lost. Some of these are fluorescent, so if you’re wanting to add some extra delight for a child I highly recommend buying a UV flashlight to go with this! As a side note, if you do buy a UV flashlight, do not let your child handle it themselves since the light emitted from them can be very harmful to the eyes if looked into directly.

I was expecting more crystals inside the geodes.
A lot of the geodes were solid inside and did not have very many crystals if any kind. I was very disappointed with what I teceived. They were supposed to be quality geodes, but they weren’t.

We hunted these in place of eggs on Easter and cracked them open, it was a GREAT time! They are GORGEOUS inside, all of them! One of us even got lucky enough to break open an amythest! Amazing! Will buy this again for sure!

Both the 7 year old and I loved this. All but a few geodes were hollow, quartz in a variety of shades (no amethyst, bummer!). Even the ones that were solid were quite cool, with a mix of crystal sizes.Some were quite difficult to get open, so recommend a chisel with a handguard, so you can get enough force.
