Exceptional FRS Radios
This is my third pair of FRS radios in about three months. I use these daily to set up K9 Search & Rescue problems for my dog in the Rocky Mountain region. It isnât practical to use radios that require a license for training because Iâm always using different âsubjectsâ so that the dog learns to discriminate between the scent of different people. For those who donât know, the FCC limits the power on FRS channels to 2-watts which isnât much. In certain terrain, the usable range of these radios can be less than a mile but thatâs the downfall of all FRS radios – regardless of the range manufacturers put on the box. These radios can also access GMRS channels and will automatically transmit with 5-watts of power on GMRS channels. This does help extend the range slightly over FRS. We have tried Midland and Motorola radios; they all perform similarly on the respective 2-W and 5-W channels. The difference between Cobra and others is volume, durability, and the user interface. The radio models I have tried that use buttons for volume adjustment are not practical to use. You have to be in the right mode to adjust volume and some have such weak speakers that you canât hear the radio unless you hold it to your ear. The two main functions of any radio are on/off and volume. Because those two functions are on a dial, the buttons on the front of the radio can remain locked once the radio is set up. This is huge! With other radios, you are constantly fiddling with the buttons to lock and unlock the buttons each time you use them. Lastly, the Lithium ion batteries perform better than expected. I was hesitant to purchase these because itâs really easy to swap out AA batteries in the field. The lithium ion batteries have good life and the indicator gives you plenty of notice when the battery starts to fade. These radios are about as good as they get for non-licensed use.

Very good audio, robust design, nice features….but 32 miles is a big stretch!!!
Works great with the kids. Easy to use, very quick response when transmitting and receiving. Previous set of inexpensive units took almost 1/2 second to connect; these respond quickly.Only issue is the advertised 32 mile max range. That would have to be in free space or in the middle of an ocean or sea, or from a two mile high peak. High power mode is 1.5 watts and that stretches out to 2-3 miles on a good day in the real world.

Are These Walkie Talkies Right for You?
As someone who regularly hikes and camps, I’ve found these Cobra Walkie Talkies to be incredibly useful for group activities. Here’s what you need to know to decide if they’re right for you:Buy these if you:- Need reliable communication for hiking, camping, or outdoor group activities- Want weather updates through NOAA channels- Need a splash-proof device that can handle rain- Like having a built-in flashlight for convenience- Want rechargeable batteries instead of disposablesSkip these if you:- Need professional-grade communication equipment- Require guaranteed communication beyond 5 miles- Are looking for the absolute cheapest optionReal-World Performance:While advertised range is 30+ miles, expect 2-5 miles in actual outdoor conditions with trees and terrain. This is typical for all consumer walkie-talkies and is plenty for most hiking and camping scenarios. Battery life is solid, and the low battery indicator gives plenty of warning before needing a recharge.Bottom Line:These are excellent recreational walkie-talkies for outdoor enthusiasts. They strike a good balance between features and usability, making them perfect for families and hiking groups who need reliable short-range communication. The splash-proof design and NOAA weather access add real value for outdoor use.

Not too good
They are suppose to work 38 miles apart but this is not true. The stopped working after they were only 2 blocks apart. Very disappointed in this product

They are not long range!!!!
They will not reach the distance they say . On a clear day we could not have a clear conversation less than a half mile apart . That is not what they advertised. Waste of money and time.

Nothing Like the Cobra Brand!
I tried to save some money and get a cheaper brand and, of course, you get what you pay for. These radios are great! Compatible with most radios out there and the range is decent, depending on where you are. Great battery life and very clear sound. Theyâre also sturdy and a nice size.
